Motivational interviewing (MI) is a treatment philosophy that ignites a client’s inherent desire to make positive, impactful changes to their life–on their own terms. In many cases, a client in treatment already has the tools they need to reach their goals. It’s just a matter of knowing how to use them.
Clients improve self-efficacy by understanding that if he or she wants to change an aspect of their life, it’s up to them to do it. During MI, the therapist and client work together to come up with options for reaching their goals instead of the therapist simply dictating solutions.
