The Whole Person

During individualized therapy, a client works with a mental health professional in private, one-on-one sessions that provide insight into the disease of addiction and increase self-knowledge and self-awareness. At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center, therapy is a collaborative process. We foster an environment where the therapist and client can work together without fear of judgment.

Princeton Detox & Recovery Center clients are required to attend at least one individual therapy session each week, in addition to several weekly group therapy sessions. We structure individualized therapy to each client’s personal needs and rely on several therapeutic modalities, including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is used to treat a multitude of behavioral health issues and is one of the most widely used modalities in the realm of addiction treatment. During CBT, the therapist and client work collaboratively to learn how identify and correct the negative thought patterns that lead to unhealthy, destructive behaviors.

CBT aims to give clients the coping skills necessary to put an end to the negative thought cycle and ultimately reduce their risk of a relapse. This type of therapy addresses a number of conditions that occur with addiction, including:

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps individuals manage intense emotions and stress and gain healthy interpersonal skills and find meaning in life. DBT is a useful type of therapy for those with anxiety, borderline personality disorder and depression, among other mental health issues. It seeks to improve self-acceptance, thus reducing the desire to abuse drugs or alcohol.

DBT involves a series of mindfulness exercises that teach clients how to be present by paying attention to the breath, their emotions and the environment. These exercises teach clients how to observe without judgment, manage destructive behaviors and feel more emotionally balanced.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a treatment philosophy that ignites a client’s inherent desire to make positive, impactful changes to their life–on their own terms. In many cases, a client in treatment already has the tools they need to reach their goals. It’s just a matter of knowing how to use them.

Clients improve self-efficacy by understanding that if he or she wants to change an aspect of their life, it’s up to them to do it. During MI, the therapist and client work together to come up with options for reaching their goals instead of the therapist simply dictating solutions.

Relapse Prevention Training

It’s vital that clients have the skills necessary to abstain from destructive behaviors and cope with the stresses of everyday life that can lead to a relapse. Relapse prevention training (RPT) helps clients confront the underlying issues and triggers that have contributed to substance use and equips them with the skills to maintain a healthy recovery in the real world. In some cases, RPT groups may continue to meet during the aftercare stage of recovery as a way to provide clients with ongoing support.
