If you are interested in entering into a treatment program, you might be curious about potential challenges you are liable to face along the way. Getting sober is not easy — in fact, it might be one of the most challenging things you ever do. Rest assured that the process of getting sober will inevitably be easier than wading through the mountain of consequences associated with active addiction. As soon as you overcome the initial hurdles, you will be well on your way to living a peaceful and fulfilling life free from the unending choas of substance use.

What Challenges Might Your Face in Rehab?

What challenges might you face in rehab? Below is a list of several potential challenges. Remember that no matter what challenges you face, you will have constant access to the support you need to successfully overcome them.

  • You will be faced with some uncomfortable emotions that you might have been numbing out for quite some time. The initial shock of emotional discomfort can be challenging, but feelings are not facts and they are always temporary. While in treatment you will develop skills that lend themselves to effective emotional regulation, so you can move through uncomfortable emotions quickly without giving them the power to ruin your day.

  • You might have to co-habitate with individuals you wouldn’t normally mix with. In an inpatient detox and rehab setting you will be living under the same roof as others who are at a similar stage in their recovery journeys. You might not befriend all of your peers, but you will have the unique and eye-opening opportunity to relate, support, and encourage rather than compare.

  • You will be exploring the past, which might not always be pleasant. In many cases, adverse past experiences contribute to the development of addiction. In order for addiction to be adequately treated all contributing factors must be addressed. It can be emotionally uncomfortable to excavate your personal history, but you will always do so in a safe and supportive environment.

It is important to remember that longer term benefits of traditional treatment always outweigh temporary challenges.

How to Avoid Future Relapse

Keep in mind — if you keep up with your personal aftercare program and successfully avoid a return to drinking or drug use, you will never have to revisit the challenges associated with drug and alcohol rehab. The best way to avoid relapse is by making your recovery a priority. You can easily do this by:

  • Ensuring you are actively participating in a 12 Step program (or alternative peer support program) on a daily basis.

  • Keeping up with individual therapy sessions at least once every week.

  • Making self-care a priority and tending to your own mental and emotional needs.

  • Continuing with psychiatric care in the case of a dual diagnosis disorder.
