Drug Addiction in New Jersey

Drug abuse and addiction have become major public health threats throughout the state of New Jersey. While drug abuse is on the rise across the board, opioid narcotics like heroin and prescription painkillers have become main points of concern. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there were a total of 2,900 reported drug overdose deaths throughout the state of New Jersey in the year 2018 alone. Of these fatalities, 2,583 were directly linked to an opioid narcotic – roughly 90 percent. The two most commonly abused opioids throughout the state of New Jersey remain heroin, which is responsible for roughly 42 percent of all addiction treatment center admissions according to the Department of Human Services, and prescription painkillers like hydrocodone and oxycodone. opioid painkiller abuse has been on the rise, which can be largely attributed to the amount of prescriptions that are written on an annual basis. According to the same study published by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, New Jersey providers wrote 38.9 opioid prescriptions for every 100 residents in 2018 alone.

It is important to note that opioids are not the only reason for concern. A recent New Jersey Drug Control Update stated that between the years 2009 to 2010, New Jersey was one of the top 10 states for cocaine use among individuals aged 12 or older. Roughly 7.33 percent of all New Jersey residents reported using an illicit substance of some kind over the course of the past month.
