Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in New Jersey

Excessive alcohol consumption and alcohol abuse are major health-related threats throughout the state of New Jersey. According to the New Jersey Department of Health, binge drinking is one of the most dangerous patterns of drug abuse statewide. Binge drinking is especially common among males and young adults, and is characterized by the consumption of over five alcoholic beverages in a one-hour period (for women, it is characterized by the consumption of four or more alcoholic beverages in a one-hour period). In New Jersey, the rough percentage of adults over the age of 18 who reported binge drinking within the past month in 2017 was 16.7 percent. The national average is 17 percent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 18.2 percent of adults in New Jersey and 23.7 percent of high school students reported binge drinking in 2011. Over the course of the past several years, these rates have continued to increase. According to the same report, excessive drinking results in roughly 1,800 deaths every year in the state of New Jersey as well as 50,856 years of potential life lost. If you or your loved one has been suffering at the hands of an alcohol abuse disorder of any severity, there is help available. Princeton’s alcohol rehab program was carefully developed to help New Jersey residents of all ages overcome alcohol abuse and dependence permanently, and go on to lead the healthy and rewarding lives they deserve.
