Overcoming Heroin Addiction

Heroin addiction is a chronic, relapsing issue that has completely devastated peoples lives throughout the country over the course of the past several decades. Heroin addiction can affect men and women of all ages and walks of life, and can quickly progress into a life-threatening issue in a short matter of weeks. The National Institute on Drug Abuse reports that an average of 128 Americans lose their lives on a daily basis at the hands of an opioid abuse disorder, and that opioid use costs the US roughly $78.5 billion every single year. Out of the 67,367 Americans who died from a drug overdose in the year 2018, 46,802 involved an opioid narcotic of any kind, and 14,996 involved a combination of heroin and a synthetic opioid like fentanyl.

There are many short and long-term effects of heroin abuse, the most common being:

  • A range of physical symptoms, including dry mouth, flushing of the skin, nausea and vomiting, chronic constipation, severe itching and compromised coordination
  • Moving back and forth between a state of consciousness, or “nodding out”
  • Insomnia and other sleep-related issues
  • Collapsed veins (common with intravenous heroin use)
  • Abscesses and other skin disorders (also common with intravenous use)
  • Infection of the heart valves and the heart lining
  • Liver and kidney disease
  • Pneumonia and other lung complications
  • The development of certain mental health disorders, including anxiety or depression
  • Intense psychological cravings that lead to chronic heroin use
  • The development of a physical tolerance and the presence of withdrawal symptoms when use is stopped suddenly

Sadly, the majority of men and women who are in desperate need of professional treatment do not end up receiving any level of clinical care. There is help available – if you or someone you love has been struggling with heroin addiction, reach out to Princeton Detox & Recovery Center today.

The Heroin Withdrawal Process

Medically monitored detox is a crucial stage of every multi-phased treatment program. At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we utilize a combination of proven medical techniques, intensive therapeutic methods and effective holistic modalities. Our integrated program of care focuses on providing each client with a safe and pain-free withdrawal.

The techniques we utilize include:

  • Medication Assisted Treatment (replacement medications)
  • Anti-nausea medications, non-addictive sleep aids, over-the-counter pain relievers and topical analgesics
  • Nutritional support (through nutrient dense, chef-prepared meals)
  • Intensive therapeutic intervention
  • A range of amenities geared towards client comfort and relaxation
  • Daily access to on-site 12 step meetings and support groups
  • Access to a range of holistic therapies, including yoga therapy, acupuncture, physical therapy and energy work

We are dedicated to providing the most comprehensive care offered by any detox facility throughout the Tri-State area. However, it is important to understand that medical detox never serves as a stand-alone solution for heroin addiction. Because the psychological cravings associated with heroin addiction can be so intense and long-lasting, transferring into a higher level of clinical care once physical stabilization has been achieved is always a good idea. At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center, we put a strong emphasis on helping each of our clients develop a solid and easily attainable aftercare plan.

Princeton Detox & Recovery Center
The Services We Provide

At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we are much more than a medical detox facility. Many state-run facilities or detox programs found in traditional hospital settings are sterile, impersonal and restricted in the services they provide. We believe that medical detox should work towards more than physical stabilization – we believe that detox should pave the road for continuing sobriety, introducing clients to intensive therapy and the 12 step model of recovery. Some of the unique, therapeutic services we provide include:

  • A thorough and personalized addiction assessment – Upon admission to our heroin detox program each client undergoes an in-depth assessment. This helps our clinical team decide which detox services will prove the most effective for each unique case.
  • Case management services – Each client is paired with an experienced and compassionate case manager, who walks the client and his or her loved ones through every stage of the early recovery process. Case managers work closely with the clinical team and help develop an individualized plan for continuing care.
  • Individual, group and family therapy sessions – At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we believe that therapy should be available during every stage of the recovery process. We offer individual therapy sessions at least once a week, group therapy sessions that meet on a daily basis and family therapy sessions whenever possible.
  • Thorough aftercare planning – Having a plan for continuing care in place is essential to relapse prevention. This plan generally includes an immediate transition into a higher level of clinical care – usually residential or inpatient heroin rehab.

At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we have developed an admissions process that is simple and straightforward. When it comes to heroin addiction, being admitted to a detox center quickly and efficiently can be a matter of life and death. The moment you give us a call we conduct a brief pre-assessment over the phone which can be completed in a matter of minutes. We ask a series of simple, non-invasive questions that help our clinical team determine which level of clinical care is the most appropriate. If our heroin detox program is a good fit, we immediately begin exploring coverage options and developing stress-free plans for intake. At Princeton Detox & Recovery Center we work closely with most major regional providers in the Tri-State area in order to make our detox services as accessible as possible. We also work with most major national provers, meaning that if you or your loved one is currently insured through any provider, there is a very good chance that our services are covered partially or in full. When it comes to heroin addiction, a quick admission is of the utmost importance. If you are unable to transport yourself or your loved one on the date of intake we offer safe and reliable transportation directly to our facility.

The good news is that recovery is always possible, even for the most extreme cases. Contact us today to begin your personal journey of heroin addiction recovery.
